Boating Season Awaits! Checklist for Getting Your Vessel Water-Ready

Bringing boats out of storage requires some careful attention to ensure they're ready for use. Here are some tips for making sure your vessel is ready to take on the waves:

  • Inspect Thoroughly: Before taking your boat out of storage, thoroughly inspect it for any signs of damage or wear. Check the hull, propeller, rudder, and other components for cracks, corrosion, or any other issues.

  • Reconnect Batteries: Reconnect the boat's batteries and ensure they're fully charged. Check the battery terminals for corrosion and clean them if necessary.

  • Check Fluid Levels: Check the oil, coolant, and other fluid levels in the engine. Top off any fluids as needed and replace them if they appear dirty or degraded.

  • Check Safety Equipment: Inspect and test all safety equipment, including life jackets, fire extinguishers, and emergency flares. Replace any expired or damaged items.

  • Test Drive: Before heading out on the water, take your boat for a test drive in calm conditions. Pay attention to how it handles and performs, and address any issues before venturing out further.

For safe boating, it's also crucial to have the right equipment on board. Here's a list of essential items you should have in your inventory before you take a trip out on the water:

  • Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs): Ensure you have enough properly fitting life jackets or PFDs for everyone on board. They should be Coast Guard-approved and easily accessible.

  • Sound-Producing Devices: Carry a whistle, horn, or bell to signal other boats in case of an emergency or to alert them of your presence.

  • Visual Distress Signals and Communication Devices: Depending on your location and boat size, you may need to carry distress signals, such as flares, smoke signals, or an orange distress flag. Carry a fully charged cellphone or marine VHF radio to call for help if needed. Make sure you have a way to keep these devices dry.

  • First Aid Kit: Have a well-stocked first aid kit on board to handle minor injuries or medical emergencies.

  • Safety Ladder or Rope: If your boat has a raised deck, ensure you have a safety ladder or rope ladder to help passengers get back on board if they fall overboard.

  • Boating Regulations and Documentation: Familiarize yourself with local boating regulations and carry all necessary documentation, such as registration and insurance papers, on board.

By following these tips, your boat can be ready for use after being in storage, and you can enjoy a safe and trouble-free experience on the water this summer.
