Outdoor Exercise: 5 Tips to Stay Safe While Working Out

For many people springtime means the great outdoors is calling! Workouts such as road running, hiking, walking, biking, and swimming are all great ways to get active during the warmer months. Before you lace up your sneakers or bring your bike out of storage, it’s a good idea to review some safety precautions for outdoor exercise so your workout doesn’t end in an accident.

  1. Wear bright-colored or reflective clothing. Making yourself visible to drivers and other people on the road is vital, especially if you work out early in the morning or late at night. Be sure to opt for at least one article of bright and/or reflective clothing to help you stand out against the pavement.

  2. Plan your route. If you are new to outdoor exercise or are interested in trying a new route, make sure to plan ahead of time. It’s a good idea to know how many miles your route is, what elevation changes are in store, and if you’ll be on busy roads at times.

  3. Check the weather. Exercising outside is great on a mild, sunny day. However, if the day's temperature will be extremely hot or cold, or the weather calls for rain and thunderstorms, you may want to consider postponing your workout.

  4. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! This is especially important when working out in the summer months. Drink water throughout your workout to maintain hydration while you’re sweating. If you can’t carry a water bottle, hydration packs and belts are great alternatives to avoid dehydration.

  5. Protect your skin. The sun’s UV rays are harsh, especially in the summer, so be sure to apply sunscreen to any exposed skin before you head outside. If you’re in the sun for more than a couple of hours or sweating a lot, remember to reapply your sunscreen periodically to stay protected.

Exercising outside can be very enjoyable, but it brings on a different set of risks than indoor workouts. Being prepared and aware of your surroundings is the best way to safely get your sweat on this summer.
