Renter-Friendly Tips for Hanging Decorations

They way you decorate your home is an expression of who you are. Just because you are renting a property doesn’t mean you aren’t able to add your own personal style to the space.

Most rental properties have restrictions outlined in the lease regarding wall décor, so we recommend reviewing your lease before you begin decorating to make sure you understand the rules and can avoid penalties when moving out.

Here are some renter-friendly tips for hanging decorations.

1. Use adhesive strips and hooks. Adhesive strips are a great alternative to nails for hanging decorations and wall art. They are double-sided and come with easy-to-use instructions for removal when you are ready to switch up your décor or move out. Many hardware stores also sell hooks and offer a variety of weight limits and styles to fit your needs.
   
   
2. Opt for picture framing hooks. These types of hooks, otherwise known as monkey hooks, typically only require a small hole that can easily be repaired if needed. Be sure to check your lease or consult with your landlord to find out if they allow these hooks.
   
   
3. Don’t forget about good old tape. There are so many different types of tape on the market to choose from, you’re bound to find an option that works for you. Double-sided tape is great for hanging things flat to the wall, like posters and small pictures. Decorative tape can be used to add a design aspect to your décor, or even as a border to mimic a picture frame.

Another smart thing to do when you begin renting a new place is document any existing wall damages or nail holes left over from previous tenants and share the information with your landlord right away. This way, they will not be able to charge for damages you didn’t cause.
