Snow Shoveling: 5 Tips to Help You Get Ahead

When the snow first hits the ground, it seems magical. However, that magic starts to wear off once you realize that you now have to maintain it. Shoveling snow is one of those tasks that nobody really enjoys doing, but it’s something that must get done. It’s also one of those tasks where if you don’t perform it properly, you’re more than likely to get hurt.

Here’s a few tips on how to shovel and clean up snow effectively:

1. Dress warm. Sure, shoveling is hard work and it’s likely to make you sweat. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t layer up to go out in the cold. It’s recommended that you warm up before you begin shoveling so you’re not prone to injury. You can always take layers off as needed.
   
   
2. Purchase a good snow shovel. The secret to doing the least amount of work while shoveling, is buying a good snow shovel. You don’t have to break the bank on a top-of-the-line shovel, but one of good quality will make a difference.
   
   
3. Lift with your legs, not your back. Being aware of how you’re shoveling can help you avoid injury. You should use your legs to lift as much as possible, trying not to put much strain on your back. It also helps to hold one hand close to the head of the shovel for more control. If the snow feels heavy, pick up a smaller amount of snow at a time.
   
   
4. Stay on top of it. Try not to let too much snow accumulate before you make it out to shovel. Snow is also lighter when its fresh and before it’s started melting.
   
   
5. Trust your body. If you’re feeling short of breath, or something in your body just feels abnormal, stop shoveling. Take a break if needed – unfortunately – the snow’s not going anywhere anytime soon without you.
