Summer weekends are times for celebration, family gatherings, and of course, delicious barbecued food. While enjoying the festivities, put safety first so everyone can enjoy a fun holiday. Here are some essential tips for grilling safety:

  1. Choose the Right Location - Always set up your grill in an open area away from buildings, overhanging branches, and other flammable materials. Place your grill on a flat, stable surface to prevent tipping, and keep it at least 10 feet away from your house, garage, or other structures.

  2. Prepare Your Grill - Remove grease and fat buildup from the grill grates and trays to prevent flare-ups. If you’re using a gas grill, check the gas tank hose for leaks before using it. You can do this by applying a light soap and water solution to the hose. A propane leak will release bubbles.

  3. Handle Charcoal with Care - Only use charcoal starter fluid designed for grilling. Never use gasoline or other flammable liquids. Allow the coals to completely cool before disposing of them in a metal container.

  4. Manage the Fire - Never leave your grill unattended. Flare-ups can happen quickly. Keep a spray bottle of water handy to control minor flare-ups. For larger fires, keep a fire extinguisher within reach.

  5. Dress Appropriately - Wear clothing that won’t dangle into the grill and catch fire, and use long-handled tools to keep your hands and arms away from the heat.

  6. Consider Your Surroundings - Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area. Be mindful of windy conditions that can blow sparks and cause fires to spread.

Remember, a little caution goes a long way in preventing accidents and keeping your celebrations on track. Happy grilling!
