When temperatures drop, our pets rely on us more than ever to keep them warm, comfortable, and protected. Winter weather brings unique hazards, from icy sidewalks to toxic de-icing chemicals, but a few simple steps can go a long way in keeping your furry family members safe.
- Limit outdoor time during extreme cold. Even pets with thick coats can be vulnerable to frostbite and hypothermia. Keep walks short and watch for signs of discomfort like shivering or lifting their paws.
- Protect their paws. Ice, snow, and rock salt can irritate paw pads. Wipe your pet’s feet after each walk and consider booties or paw balms for extra protection.
- Bring pets indoors whenever possible. If it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them. Do not leave pets unattended in vehicles, which can act like refrigerators in freezing weather.
- Avoid winter toxins. Antifreeze and certain ice melts are extremely dangerous—even small amounts can be fatal. Store chemicals safely and clean spills right away.
- Do not shave their coat. During colder months, longer fur provides warmth for your pet. Keep fur trimmed to avoid ice balls or trapped salt, and consider a sweater or coat for more short-haired dogs.
- Stay alert during walks. Keep pets off frozen ponds or lakes and be cautious of hidden hazards like ice patches or deep snow that can trap or injure them.
- Provide warm, draft-free shelter. For pets that spend time outdoors, ensure they have access to insulated bedding and protection from wind and moisture. Fresh, unfrozen water should always be available.
With a little preparation and awareness, you can help ensure your pets stay safe, healthy, and cozy all winter long.
