Stay Safe Behind the Wheel this Summer

Car key handover with sunlight in the background.

Summer is a busy time to be on the road with more travel, out-of-town drivers, road work, and seasonal hazards that can increase the chance of an accident.

In addition to staying alert and avoiding risky behaviors, here are a few tips that can help you stay safe behind the wheel this summer.

  • Check your engine prior to a long road trip to ensure all belts, hoses, and fluid levels are in order. When in doubt, get a professional opinion.
  • Inspect and fill tires with the recommended pressure.
  • Test your car’s air conditioning to make the ride more comfortable.
  • Ensure lights and windshield wipers are in working order.
  • Look out for increased pedestrian and bike traffic.
  • Take breaks on longer trips to avoid drowsiness.
  • Store an emergency preparedness kit including basic car care tools like jumper cables and jack.

IMPORTANT REMINDER: Temperatures can rise quickly and create unsafe conditions for anyone in a parked car on hot summer days especially children, older adults sensitive to heat or in poor health, and pets.

Summer driving can feel easier than winter driving, but it comes with its own set of risks. Take a few minutes to prepare before taking to the road.
