It’s easy to think, “It’ll only be a minute.” Whether you’ve been trying a new recipe or warming some leftover soup, we’ve all stepped away from the stove for a quick task. As a recent claim reminds us, even a short absence from the kitchen can lead to big consequences.
The Claim
We recently met with one of our policyholders after a fire loss in their home. During our inspection, they explained that they had been cooking beans in pan on the stove and briefly left the kitchen. When they returned, the pan was on fire and much of the home was filled with smoke.
Fortunately, the fire didn’t spread beyond the stove, but the damage was significant. Our team observed a strong, smoky odor and light soot throughout the dwelling. In the end, nearly $50,000 was required to restore the space, which included professional cleaning, carpet replacement, and painting the interior.
It Can Happen to Anyone
The U.S. Fire Administration reports cooking fires as the leading cause of home fires, with unattended cooking being the #1 cause of them. It doesn’t take much to start a fire – a few moments away from the stove is all it takes for oil or food to overheat and ignite.
Here are some quick reminders to help you stay safe while you "chef up":
- Never leave your cooking unattended.
- Use a timer to remind you when your food is done cooking.
- Keep flammable items (dish towels, paper towels, food packaging, etc.) away from the stove.
- Inspect your smoke detectors regularly to ensure they are functioning properly.
- Have a fire extinguisher within easy reach.
Remember – remain near your stove when cooking to help stay safe.
