Vehicle Theft Prevention

Gone are the days of hot-wiring cars. With keyless entry becoming the norm, thieves are now using more innovative tactics to steal vehicles.

If you own a car or plan to buy one, it is important to educate yourself on the realities of vehicle theft and learn tips to help protect your car from being stolen.

  1. Lock your car. Always lock your vehicle when parked, even if it's for a short period of time. Make sure all windows are closed as well.

  2. Park in well-lit areas. Choose well-lit and populated parking areas, especially at night. Avoid parking in isolated or dimly lit locations that can provide cover for thieves.

  3. Don't leave valuable items in sight. Keep your belongings out of sight or take them with you when you leave the car. Visible items such as laptops, bags, or electronic devices can attract thieves.

  4. Install an anti-theft system. Consider installing an alarm system or an immobilizer in your car. These devices can deter thieves and make it harder for them to steal your vehicle.

  5. Use a steering wheel lock or a gearshift lock. These visible deterrents can make it more difficult for thieves to steal your car. It adds an extra layer of security that may discourage potential thieves.

  6. Don't leave spare keys in the car. Avoid leaving spare keys inside your vehicle, as thieves can easily find them and drive away with your car.

  7. Be cautious with valet parking. If you use valet parking services, provide only the ignition key and keep the trunk and glove compartment locked.

  8. Be aware of your surroundings. Stay alert when approaching or leaving your vehicle. If you notice any suspicious individuals or activities nearby, it's better to be safe and find another parking spot.

  9. Consider a GPS tracking system. Installing a GPS tracking system in your car can help locate it if it's stolen. Some systems also offer features like remote immobilization, allowing you to disable the vehicle if necessary.

  10. Secure your garage. If you have a garage, keep it locked at all times. Ensure the garage door opener is secure and not easily accessible to potential thieves.
