Winterizing Your Boat: Storage Tips for the Off-Season

It’s always a good time to think about how to store your vessel safely for the winter. Proper storage not only protects your boat from damage, but can also help maintain your insurance coverage and avoid costly surprises come spring.

Improper storage can lead to burst hoses, rodent damage, mold, or even insurance claim denials. Some policies may include a “lay-up” clause, meaning your boat must be out of commission during specific months and stored in a secure manner.

Tip 1: Know Your Insurance Requirements

It's always a good first step to consult with your independent insurance agent about your boat coverage. Before you winterize, check your policy for:

• Storage method: Some insurers require indoor or shrink-wrapped storage.
• Lay-up dates: When your boat must be out of use.
  
• Coverage limits: Theft, fire, or weather damage may be excluded during lay-up unless specific conditions are met.
  

Pro tip: Notify your insurer if you’re changing your storage method this year.

Tip 2: Choose the Right Storage Option

• Trailer Storage: Use a hitch lock, remove valuables, and cover with a vented tarp. Elevate tires to prevent flat spots.
• Dry Stack (Indoor Marina): Offers sufficient protection and may qualify for lower premiums.
• Covered Slip (In-Water): Ideal for year-round use. Consider adding dehumidifiers and bilge alarms to alert for high water levels. 

Tip 3: Prep Your Boat Thoroughly

• Flush the engine and add antifreeze.
• Remove and store the battery indoors.
• Empty water tanks and clean out food.
• Treat fuel with stabilizer and top off the tank.
• Inspect hoses, seals, and hulls for leaks. 

By following these tips, you can help protect your investment and have a smooth return to the water next season.
