While you decorate for the upcoming holidays and settle into the warmth of your home this fall, it’s easy to forget the basic safety precautions for fire prevention. While most batteries and devices include overcharge protection features, proper storage and charging are critical in preserving battery life and minimizing exposure to overheating and fire.
Here are a few pointers to keep in mind regarding fire prevention this fall:
- Store electronic devices in cool, dry areas.
- Use manufacturer approved chargers for electronics. While generic chargers are readily available, compatible doesn’t necessarily mean safe.
- Ensure charger cords and wires are in good condition. Do not used frayed or damaged cords.
- Ensure adequate ventilation for all electronics. Do not block fans or ventilation grids and refrain from leaving electronics sitting on fabric surfaces.
- Never leave electronics charging over a weekend or break. While most devices are designed to stop charging once the battery is full, a fire could occur if the charger overheats.
- Use outlets designed to handle multiple plugs. To prevent overloading, never plug more than two electronics into an outlet at once or “piggyback” extra devices on extension cords or wall outlets.
- Never use the “daisy chain” method for power strips. Do not join multiple power strips in line.
A few simple steps could not only prevent fires and costly damage within your home, but can also help extend the life of your devices.
